November 9th Kristallnacht Commemoration

Sunday November 9th, 2008, is the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass in which windows of Jewish shops, and entire synagogues, were destroyed in many places in Germany. The event was a grand prelude to the Nazi atrocities against Jews and World War II.

This year a public commemoration of the event will take place on Sunday November 9th  at 2:30 p.m. in Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library, 123 South Linn Street, Iowa City.

Mrs. Marianne Bern, currently of Cedar Rapids, is the featured speaker. She personally witnessed Kristallnacht and was one of the last people to be in her synagogue before its destruction.

Commemorate this awesome day in history and listen to one woman's personal story.

The program is free and open to the public. The venue is accessible to all. Refreshments will follow.

This November 9th event is the first public commemoration of Kristallnacht take place in Iowa City in 20 years. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Kristallnacht Zion Lutheran Church presented an historical play by Patti Mott. The 2008 event organizers take their inspiration from the 1988 event and have ongoing thanks to the 50th anniversary producers.

Mostly event planners take their inspiration from having met Marianne Bern and knowing some of her story. We appreciate her availability to speak with us this year and thank her. Please join us in commemorating this important day and listening to a dynamic and vivacious speaker.

The afternoon commemoration is presented by anyroad productions with sponsorship from Agudas Achim Congregation, Hillel Foundation, the Iowa City Public Library
and additional groups.

Metered parking is free on Sunday. Parking ramps are located near the library. Don’t let anything hinder you attendance! Please contact us for any assistance you require.

July 10th  Balch Family Tribute and Art Exhibit
Thursday, July 10, 2008
5:00pm - 9:30pm
Iowa City Public Library Room A
123 South Linn
Iowa City, IA

Meeting Room A of the Iowa City Public Library will be transformed into an art gallery one night only Thursday July 10, 2008 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm to exhibit work by JACK BALCH (1909-1980). The event is free and open to the public.

London born JACK BALCH lived what some might consider a lifetime of adventure during his childhood alone. Deported by virtue of being a Russian national, with a dad in the Jewish Brigade fighting to free Palestine, he lived in Archangel, Odessa, and Constantinople during and after the Russian Revolution before settling in St. Louis, Missouri.

As a young man he directed the Missouri’s Works Progress Administration Writers’ Project. He then worked as a crime reported for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch before covering Hollywood and theatre. He became a playwright, novelist, and poet. He worked for WPIX-TV in New York and received an award in 1956 for writing the year’s best TV play. He spoke at least eight languages, edited theatre magazines, loved a wife, raised two sons, and, from 1960 in New York until his death in Iowa City in1980, devoted himself to painting.

His art has been exhibited in Iowa, Israel, and Italy, but for thirty years much of it sat in his eldest son’s home, awaiting this show.

MICHAEL BALCH (1939-2008) economics professor, mentor to many, passionate thinker,
Jewish communal leader, and mench left many friends and a house full of hundreds of paintings by his father.

DAVID BALCH, Michael’s brother and Jack’s surviving son, will be present Thursday evening to make comments and answer questions as we gather as a community to honor one hundred years of remarkable family history, two incredible men, and a tangible legacy of paint on canvas and slides thereof.

Honor the father and the son with us as meeting room A is transformed into an Art Gallery.
Come to the opening. See a sampling of Jack’s art before it leaves town after this one evening show.

This event is presented by anyroad productions with help from Agudas Achim Congregation
and the Aliber Hillel Jewish Student Center. Chabad of Iowa City will provide refreshments.
